Things remembered.... (21st Nov 08 at 12:30am UTC)
Part 1

A few months after my sixth birthday, my parents told me I'd be starting school. "But I don't want to leave the castle...bad things are out there." I whined at breakfast.

"Now who told you that?" Sora, my father and also Radiant Garden's King, asked.

"Uncle Riku." I said. Riku really wasn't my uncle, but he was the closest thing my dad had to a brother, not to mention he was my father most trusted Royal Knight and best friend.

"Don't worry sweetie, a couple Knights will be guarding the school." Kairi, my mother and Radiant Garden's queen, said. She paused. "Won't the Striker's son be there?"

"Azull’s son? Yeah he's starting today as well.” Sora said.

Azull Striker was the Captain of the Royal Knights. He and his wife Deanixous went on paternal leave so they could spend more time with Axel. I went into my room and changed into a shirt and pants. Kairi then carried me to the school. She put me down as she saw Deanixous hugging her son. Kairi waved as Deanixous looked over. She smiled.

"Who's that?" Her son, who I assumed was Axel, asked.

"That's the princess Axel." Deanixous said.

We walked over to them. "It's nice seeing you again. This must be Axel."

Deanixous nodded. "Say hello Axel."

"Hi." Axel said shyly.

"Hi." I whispered back nervously.

"You'll be fine Mariya." Kairi said as she leaned down and hugged me. She then motioned to two men in armor, standing near the playground equipment. "They'll make sure nothing bad happens."

I squeezed my mother as one of the Knights came over. He bowed. "Don't worry Kairi, she's in good hands."

"Thank you Ian." Kairi said. She kissed my forehead and handed me a light blue backpack that had the Royal Symbol sewn into it. "Have fun sweetie."

I kissed her cheek. "Bye mama."

Ian led me to the school's entrance, the rest of the kids following him. A woman with red hair was still at the playground's gates, squeezing her daughter, which looked like a miniature version of her, tight. The girl squirmed out of her mother's arms.

"Mom." She whined. "I'll be fine."

"Alright, but remember your aunt Sarah will be picking you up after school." She said.

The girl nodded and ran to catch up with us. In the classroom, I sat in the front; I put my book bag next to my desk, the Royal Symbol facing the desk to my left. Axel sat in the third row, behind me. The red-haired girl sat next to me and smiled. "Hi I'm Riana." She said.

"Mariya." I said, smiling. "Your mom is pretty."

"Everyone says I look exactly like her." Riana said, blushing. She then looked at my book bag. "Your Sora's daughter."

I nodded. We talked until class started. We were friends ever since then.

During recess I sat by my lonesome on the swings, watching the other kids play. Axel and Riana came up to me. "Come on and play with us." Riana said, handing me a ball.

I laughed and threw it to Axel as I got off the swing. He barely caught it. "You're it!" I said before running twords Ian.

"Hey!" Axel complained. He chased after Riana, who ran twords me. When he was about to tag her, a kid screamed. We all froze, looking in the direction of the scream. A lone Neoshadow stood in the playground, looking around for something. It stopped when it spotted me Axel and Riana. The other kids ran inside, being guided by the other knight.

Ian stepped in front of Axel and Riana and a dark grey keyblade appeared in his hand. The other knight appeared, wielding a sword. "Get them inside Ian, I'll keep it busy." He said, before attacking the Neoshadow. it jumped back, dodging.

Ian picked me up and ran twords the school entrance, making sure he was in the way of the Neoshadows path to any of us. Another Neoshadow appeared and Axel pulled Riana behind Ian, knowing what a Heartless was capable of. The Neoshadow slashed at Ian, and he jumped back. I felt something warm run down my leg.

Ian swung his keyblade at the Neoshadow, and sent it flying into the fence. He pushed us into the school before shutting the door. He inspected me and saw a cut on my leg. "Heal." he muttered, and the cut disapeared. He whipped off any blood that remained. "There, all better."

The other knight came in. "They retreated." He said.

"Go and contact their highnesses. They should know about this." Ian said, making sure Riana and Axel were unharmed.

The other knight nodded, and ran twords the school's office.

At the end of the day, Axel sat next to me on the school's steps, while we waited for our parent to pick us up. Riana had already been picked up by her aunt.

Azull stepped into the playground and came up to us. I smiled. "Hi Azull." I said.

He smiled back and looked over to Ian, who was keeping watch for any more Heartless. "Sora told me to take Mariya home." He said.

Ian nodded. Azull turned back to us. "Come on you two, time to go home."

I put my book bag on, and followed Azull, Axel walking next to me. Once at the entrance he crouched down. "You'll be safe once you're in the castle."

I smiled slightly. "Those Neoshadows were after me, weren't they?" I asked.

Azull sighed, and nodded. "But don't worry, as long as there are Knights around, you'll be safe, princess."

"See you tomorrow Mariya." Axel said, smiling.

"Bye Axel." I said, before going into the castle.

The next day at recess, I couldn't relax. Neither could Ian or Darek, the other Knight. They constantly watched for Heartless. Axel and Riana stayed near me, watching places when Ian wasn't. A Neoshadow popped up in front of me and Axel threw a rock at its head. "Run Mariya!" He shouted.

I ran, but stopped a few Neoshadows’ appearing and surrounding me. I panicked, looking for a way out. I put my hands up as one slashed at me. Chink. I looked at the Neoshadow it looked to be knocked out, just standing there and not moving.

In my hand was a golden Keyblade. One hand guard was a dragon’s neck and head, and the other was a dragons’ wing. At the end of the rod was a spear point and a dragon’s wing hung down an inch or two behind and under it. I started swinging it randomly at the Neoshadows and they fled. Ian ran over and looked me over and was relieved when he was sure I was unharmed.

At dinner that night both my parents wouldn't talk to one another, or me, which was unusual. When the finished eating they looked at me. "Mariya, Ian told us you got a keyblade today."

"Is that bad?" I asked, unsure.

"No sweetie, it's just...you won't be able to see you friends from school now." Kairi said.

"Why?" I asked, confused.

"You're not going back to that school anymore." Sora said.

I understood then. From then on I'd be attending the Knights Academy.

Part 2

I couldn't sleep that night. I turned on my lamp and looked around my room. It was the biggest room in the entire castle. Mom and Dad let me pick it out when they thought I was old enough to start sleeping in a separate room. Around my room were posters, and bookshelves, which were filled with books and trinkets I had gotten from the worlds I visited. I got out of my bed and headed to my parents room.

Riku was in the hallway, opening the door to his room, he looked over, hearing my footsteps and smiled. "Hey there little princess, couldn't sleep?" He asked.

I shook my head. "I just don't wanna go to the Academy."

He smiled, and picked me up with a grunt. He sat in a nearby chair and laughed. "You're getting heavy."

I laughed, keeping a 'you're getting old' comment to myself.

"And why not?" Riku asked.

"I'll miss my friends." I said.

"There are lots of kids at the academy. And you'll have fun." Riku paused. "Plus, you won't have to worry about the Heartless and Nobodies."

I leaned against Riku. "Why do I have to go anyway?" I asked.

"You have to learn what every keyblader has to." Riku answered.

"Why can't I learn it at the public school?"

"Because none of the teachers at the public school know a thing about keyblades. You'll do fine as long as you keep to your studies."

"Okay." I said, before getting down.

Riku stood, and walked with me to my room. "Get some sleep." He said, leaning on my door. "You'll need it for your first day."

I pulled my covers over me and turned off my lamp light. My door shut, and I fell asleep soon after.

The next morning, I got up and got dressed, and went down to the dining room. Mom and Dad were already eating, so I sat in front of my plate and ate my eggs. Once I was finished, my mother carried me down to the sparring field. She sat on a bench, and we watched Knights spar as we waited for the teacher. I didn't recognize any faces. A Knight came up to us then and bowed. He looked at me and smiled. "Well hello there princess, ready for your first day?"

"Hi." I said, smiling a bit. I hugged my mother, and she kissed my forehead. "Love you mama." I said as I slipped off her lap.

"Have fun." Kairi said as we headed twords the part of the Castle that held the Academy.

Knights walked the halls, smiling at me as we passed. We stopped in front of the academy doors, and the Knight leaned down "Alright, what do you know about the academy?" He asked.

"It used to be a bunch of unnecessary storage rooms until my dad had it remodeled to make the Royal Knights Academy." I said.

"And what's the Academy's purpose?" he asked, smiling.

"To train Royal Knight's to be prepared in the event of Heartless and/or Nobody attack." I said, remembering what the public school teacher told us. Apparently, her husband was a Royal Knight. We were going to come on a field trip next week.

"Very good princess." He said, before standing. He opened the doors and I followed him threw the hallway. He opened a door to a classroom and I stepped inside. The class looked up and watched me. There were only four kids, their ages ranging from eight to ten. I felt odd, being the youngest in the class.

"Alright class, we have a new student. This is Princess Mariya, and I expect all of you to treat her with extra respect." He said. He then looked down at me. "Sit wherever you like, princess."

I nodded, and took a seat in the front row.

"Now, get your text books out, and let's get Mariya caught up." The teacher said, getting out a dry-erase marker.

At lunch, I sat alone, picking at my food. My teacher, James, saw me and came over. "Is something wrong, princess?" He asked, looking concerned.

I shook my head. "I'm just not hungry."

"Why are you sitting alone?"

"They don't like me." I said, looking down at my plate.

"Don't be silly, you just haven't had the time to talk to them yet." James said.

One of the kids from my class, who just got their tray of food, sat next to me. "Hi." She said with a smile.

"See? Now enjoy your lunch." James said. He then left and I took a bite of my sandwich. The girl and I talked.

"Don't feel bad if you don't get summoning your keyblade down at first. James says it's the hardest thing next to summon spells. But we don't learn that until third year."

I smiled a bit. "Thanks."

James led me to the Garden, where my father was. He was watching some Knights search the gardens. "Dad!" I shouted, and ran over to him. He bent down and hugged me.

"How was your first day?" Dad asked.

"Fine." I said, smiling. I waved to James as he left. "What are they looking for?"

"Your mom lost the necklace I got her for our anniversary." Dad said with a sigh. He picked me up and sat on the bench.

One knight came over and handed Dad a diamond necklace. He smiled at me. "I heard you started at the academy today princess."

I nodded. "It wasn't so bad."

The next day I had some Princess lessons put in with the Knight lessons. It was awkward, I had to learn how to do other-word dances with one of my classmates. While we waltzed I had stepped on his foot. I must have apologized a thousand times.

By the time I was fifteen, I had graduated the Royal Knight's Academy. I knew everything a knight and princess should know. Axel had joined the Academy when he was seven. We had a lot of classes together, but since he didn't have a keyblade, he wasn't around for the lessons involving Keyblades. We sat together at lunch, along with some of the other kids. On occasions Riana could come over and hang out after school. When Axel wasn't around, she constantly teased me that I liked him. She was right, I did like him, and it eventually turned into love.

During the keyblade war, Axel's parents died, and he was devastated. He was given to his godfather and moved away to his world. I wouldn't see him again until I was sixteen.

Part 3

My sixteenth birthday party was a disaster. While dancing with several of the other princes, Maleficent appeared and sent heartless after me. The knights destroyed the heartless and drove Maleficent out of the castle. After my father ensured I was okay, we continued the party. After the Party, I went into town and got a salty-sweet ice cream.

"Mariya?" A familiar voice asked.

I turned around and gasped, standing near the weapons shop, was Axel. I ran over to him, and hugged him, dropping my ice cream. "Axel! It's been so long." I said, withdrawing.

"I know. Happy Birthday, by the way." He said, smiling.

"Thanks." I said.

"Let me buy you a new ice-cream." He said.

We walked back over to Scrooge's place and he bought two ice-creams. He gave me one and took a bite of his. i looked to him. "What are you doing back?" I asked.

"I really missed this place, I convinced Dante to let me come back." He said. "You think your parents would let me stay at the castle?"

"I wouldn't see why not." I said. "Common, they'll be happy to see you."

Once back at the castle, Mom and Dad welcomed Axel back and invited him to stay at the castle. Axel smiled. "Thank you, your majesties." He said. "And if it's not to much trouble, I'd like to resume my knight training as well."

"Of course, come on, we'll get you registered." Sora said, walking twords the academy. Axel followed.

"I know that look." Kairi said, smiling.

"What look? I'm just glad to see him again." I said.

"Uh-huh, whatever you say, sweetie." Kairi said before walking away.

Within the next two years, Axel received his Knight training and even asked me out. During those two years, I invented light portals, astonishing my parents. Two months after my eighteenth birthday, Axel was preparing for a mission when I found him.

"Be careful." I said softly.

He turned and smiled. "I'll be fine."

"But your going alone...." I said.

"Your dad knows I can handle this." Axel said. He then went to his dresser and pulled out a box wrapped with blue ribbon. "For you."

"You shouldn't have." I said, smiling.

"I wanted to." He said, handing me it.

I opened it to find a ring box. "Axel...."

"It's not what you think....well it kinda is..." Axel said, opening the ring box to reveal a beautiful ring. "It was mom's. I want you to have it as a symbol of how much I love you." Axel said. "Will you take it?"

I stared at the ring for a moment, shocked. I then looked at Axel and kissed him. He kissed back and slipped the ring on my finger. "I always have, and I always will." I whispered as he held me.

He with drew. "I'll call you when I can." He said. "Walk with me?"

I nodded and put my arm around his and we talked all the way to the gummi bay. I looked to him. "I'll miss you." I said.

"I'll miss you too." He kissed me again. "I'll be back before you know it." He said before climbing into the gummi ship. He smiled at me before it took off.

A couple days later, Axel's phone and knight symbol would be found in Twilight Town, but no trace of him. Search parties were organized, but would come up empty. Months passed, and Sora canceled the search.

"So your just giving up on him?!" I shouted.

"Mariya the Knights have searched everywhere, there's no trace of Axel anywhere." He said.

"You wouldn't give up if it was me who was missing!" I said before running out, crying. I ran to my room, locking the door behind me and cried into my pillow.

Early the next morning I packed my old back pack with a few things and opened a light portal to Traverse Town, starting my own search for Axel.
